Chapter Twenty-Four

When I opened my eyes again, I was greeted by a warm smile. It took a second for my eyes to focus and recognition to settle in. My head rested in the perfect space between Cal’s shoulder and neck. The arm around my waist and back tightened, causing a soothing comfort to ripple through me. Had Cal held me like this the entire night? From the looks of it, he hadn’t slept. Exhaustion lined the eyes roaming over my face, lingering on the wound on my brow.

“How’s the headache?” he said softly.

An almost imperceptible shimmer arced around us. I marveled at the magic keeping us safe. This was why Cal was so tired. He’d kept a wall of hard air around us the entire night, ensuring no one tumbled in their sleep. Xoc was sprawled on the stone next to us, his wings wrapped around him like a blanket.

“It’s fine, mostly.” My voice was rough from sleep. The tension in my head had eased considerably after resting. “Did you sleep at all?”

“No. I kept watch.” His head dipped so that his cheek barely brushed my temple. My mind was still in the sluggish haze of waking, but it was impossible to miss the way his body tightened around me. “I needed to know you were safe.”

A pulse of warmth thrummed in my chest. It felt too good to be watched over, cared for. “You didn’t need to do that.” I uncurled myself from under his arm and turned to face him. Of course, he’d already been doing that for days. Before Cal, if you had asked me when the last time someone took the time to care for my needs, I don’t know that I could have answered. Months, maybe years. I was always taking care of everyone, doing everything. Then there was Cal, who somehow knew what to do before I even recognized that I needed the support. And it felt good, really good. He offered the kind of comfort I’d been running towards my entire life.

“Yes. I did,” he replied sincerely. Running his hands through his hair, Cal lifted his eyes to the black sky. “I couldn’t let… I couldn’t…” His brows pinched together. “Elle, you screamed my name.”

I tried to make sense of what he was saying. “I don’t understand. When?”

Cal winced. The gaze that hit me when he lowered his eyes again was intense. It brushed against my senses in a wave, and I shivered despite the heat I felt radiating off of him.

“When you fell, you screamed my name. It was the only thing you said. You didn’t say help, or arrrgh, or any of the things you’d expect someone to say when plummeting towards their death. You said Cal.”

“I did?” I couldn’t remember. All I could remember was the rock rushing past me.

“I flung out my power, but I couldn’t see you. By the time I did, you were moving too fast for me to stop you. If Xoc hadn’t grabbed your wrist…”

He swallowed hard, and his eyes searched mine.
